Aim

To learn about how the world of business works and its relevance to almost every aspect of modern society.  Amongst other topics, you will learn about planning, finance, marketing and economics and discover some of the methods and techniques used to analyse an organisation’s performance.

Assessment

There are formal tests at the end of each topic and mock exams in both Year 10 & 11.

Final Assessment is in the form of two written examination lasting1 hour and 30 minutes. Each paper is divided into three sections: Section A: 35 marks | Section B: 30 marks |Section C: 25 marks.

Each paper will consist of calculations, multiple-choice, short-answer and extended-writing questions. Questions in Sections B and C will be based on business contexts given in the paper.

Year 12 and 13

Edexcel Business 8BS0  

Aim

These specifications encourage students to develop a critical understanding of organisations, the context in which they operate, the markets they serve and the process of adding value through a problem solving approach to study. The opportunity to pursue an area of particular interest exists within the overall framework.

Topics covered

There are two themes covered in Year 12.

Theme 1: Marketing and people

Students will develop an understanding of:

  • meeting customer needs
  • the market
  • marketing mix and strategy
  • managing people
  • entrepreneurs and leaders.

 

Theme 2: Managing business activities

Students will develop an understanding of:

  • raising finance
  • financial planning
  • managing finance
  • resource management
  • external influences.

 

There are two themes covered in Year 13
 

Theme 3: Business decisions and strategy

  • business objectives and strategy
  • business growth
  • decision-making techniques
  • influences on business decisions
  • assessing competitiveness
  • managing change

 

Theme 4: Global business

  • globalisation
  • global markets and business expansion
  • global marketing
  • global industries and companies (multinational corporations).

Assessment

There are formal tests at the end of each topic and mock exams in both Year 12 & 13.

Final Assessment in Year 13 is in the form of three written examinations each lasting 2 hours.

Paper 1 (9BS0/01) assesses marketing, people and global businesses. Questions are drawn from Themes 1 and 4, and from local, national and global contexts

Paper 2 (9BS0/02) assesses business finance and operations, business decisions and strategy. Questions are drawn from Themes 2 and 3, and from local, national and global contexts.

Paper 3 (9BS0/03) assesses content across all four themes. Questions will be drawn from local, national and global contexts. s an investigation into business in a competitive environment. For paper 3, a pre-released context document is issued in November of the previous year. The context will focus on a broad context, such as about a given industry

Overview of assessment 

For all three papers students answer all questions from two sections.  Sections A and B each comprise one data response question broken down into a number of parts, including one extended open-response question.
