Information for new parents

This pages sets out useful information for parents/carers whose children are joining Wood Green.

  • Details about school uniform are here.

  • Your child's contact details: You will receive a Data Collection Sheet at the start of the school year containing essential information such as emergency contact telephone numbers, email addresses, etc we need for communications. Please check and return it to use as soon as possible so that our records are up to date.  If you change your details during the school year, please let us have the information in writing, either a signed note/letter or an email.

  • Email: Parent email addresses are used for general email updates and a weekly WGS Briefing detailing news, next week’s events and dates for your diary. Do email your child's tutor if you have any concerns - here is a list of staff email contacts. Please email office@wgswitney.org.uk if you are not received regular email updates from the school.

  • Making contact: if there are any problems we can help with, or should know about, or if your child has achieved something we can share in, please let our child's form tutor know by email .  We also like as much feedback as possible from you concerning the general life of the school.   • Online reports: Parent Insight is the school's online reporting system that which shows details such as attendance, past reports, homework and other information for your child/children. New parents will receive a letter on how to log in. 

  • 'General' letters are published on the school website. Any acknowledgement slip should be signed and returned to your child’s form tutor as soon as possible.

  • Attendance explains what to do if your child is too ill to attend school, has a medical appointment, or if you want to apply for holiday leave: 

  • School day: please note The timings of the school day is different on a Wednesday. What to do if your child is likely to be late is also on the Attendance page.

  • Advice on travelling explains bus services and advice on journeys by car or walking.

  • The Curriculum section of the school website lists the range of subjects and courses studied at Wood Green. 

  • Clubs and societies run during the lunchtime and after school for students of all ages.  Click here for details.

  • Visits. The school has a strong tradition of visits and residential work in a wide range of areas, for example, curricular fieldwork, outward bound activities, foreign exchange and theatre visits.  The Education Act allows for the charging of board and lodging costs.  Parents in receipt of Family Income Support or Supplementary Benefit are entitled to support with these residential costs on production of documented evidence and, as always, such matters will be treated discreetly and in confidence. See our charging and remissions policy.

  • Homework is set for all students from Year 7 to 13. Please go online and use Parent Insight to see set homework. All students are additionally given a student planner to allow them an easy reference to homework set each night.  The planner can also serve as a means of communication between yourself and your child’s tutor concerning homework or other matters.

  • Promoting high standards of reading, writing and communication across all areas of school is a top priority for Wood Green and is covered in Literacy.

  • Parents Evenings. We view these as an important formal means of cementing the partnership between home and school, and both our subject reviews and assessments aim to give as much information about your child’s progress as possible.  Meeting dates are emailed to parents.
