Mathematics Curriculum |
Aim |
Students will cover a variety of mathematical topics linked to number, algebra, shape & space and data handling aimed at their current level of ability. They will develop their problem solving skills within a wide range of contexts. They will also use their mathematics in a number of real life situations. |

Please note that the Kangaroo stages are not numbered with any connection to previous key stage levels or the new GCSE grading system. Students will follow either Pathway 1, Pathway 2 or a combination of the two depending on the group they are in. Pathway 1 Kangaroo Stage 7 Term 1 Prime factorisation, powers and roots, types of number, linear sequences, ordering numbers (including negative numbers, fractions and decimals), place value, four operations (including negative numbers and decimals), using brackets, inverse operations, use conventional terms, labelling and notation with shapes, draw diagrams from written description, properties of 3D shapes, properties of quadrilaterals and triangles. Term 2 Simple algebraic concepts and terminology, simplifying algebra (including brackets), functions, substitution, fractions and percentages, ratio, number sequences, units of measure, changing from one measurement to another, measuring angles and lengths. Term 3 Angle rules, calculate with fractions, calculate with percentages, solving equations, area, perimeter and volume (and related formulae), rounding and estimation, coordinates and axes, simple graphs, transformations of shapes, constructing and interpreting diagrams, tables and charts from data, averages and measures of spread. Pathway 2 Kangaroo Stage 6 Term 1 Place value, Ordering and writing numbers, negative numbers, factors, multiples and primes, four operations including division, BIDMAS, names and properties of 2D shapes, tessellations, 3D shapes (including nets), angles, parts of a circle, simple formulae. Term 2 Fractions and the link with percentages and decimals, proportion, similar shapes and enlargement, sequences, metric conversions, imperial and metric conversions, angle properties, calculating with fractions, percentages and decimals. Term 3 Equations, area, perimeter and volume, rounding, estimating calculations, coordinates, translating and reflecting shapes on a coordinate grid, pie charts and line graphs, averages (the mean). |
Homework |
Homework is set once per week and students should be spending 20-40 minutes completing it. |
Assessment |
All students are being regularly assessed by their teachers in lessons and from homeworks. Each student will be assessed formally at least three times a year. |
Year 8 |

In Year 10 each student will be assessed formally at least three times a year, once at the end of the autumn term, once in March and in the summer term. This final assessment will be as close as possible to a full GCSE paper. |

Students will develop their ability to work at a higher level beyond GCSE Mathematics covering key pure mathematical concepts in depth such as trigonometry, differentiation and integration. They will continue to develop their problem solving skills and ability to explain themselves in a logical mathematical manner. On the applied course they will choose to study mechanics or statistics and they will learn about mathematical modelling and how mathematics has practical uses in other subjects. |
