David Merriman – is rowing 30 marathons in 30 days to raise money for Mind UK, Oxfordshire Mind (the mental health charities) and Wood Green School in Witney.
He is taking on this extraordinary feat of physical effort to raise awareness of mental health and the importance of fitness and a healthy lifestyle in having a healthy mind.
In 30 different locations around Witney and Oxforshire, you will find David rowing throughout the morning, finishing his last row of the 30 at Wood Green School, which will also be David’s 50th birthday.
David’s story of resilience starts with starting work at 13 and growing up without a father. When his mother died of cancer aged 50 herself, this hit him hard. David lost his business, his marriage and struggled with depression.
When his doctor advised him to start exercising, David took up indoor rowing. Alongside counselling, the rowing really helped David with his stress and anxiety, as well as improving his sleep, weight and fitness.
Now in a happier place, David is motivated to tell his story and spread the importance of looking after yourself in difficult times. A parent of 5 daughters, 2 of whom attend Wood Green School, David is well aware of the challenges our children face today and wants to finish his own challenge at Wood Green School on Friday 14th July, which will also be David's 50th birthday.
He will be based outside the restaurant and aims to finish during lunchtime, where he will be flanked by 2 other rowing machines so that staff and students can join him.
We hope students, staff, parents and friends of Wood Green School will support him throughout and particularly on his last day to cheer him home on his final marathon. As well as aiming to raise money for MIND, David wants to help the school with their own wellbeing initiatives and invest in some rowing machines, which ultimately he believes saved his own life.
