Student plans 136 mile walk

An A Level Student has set herself a goal of walking 136 miles over 9 days to raise money for charity.

Martha Pillin has set herself a tough challenge and would like to raise over £1,360 (ten pounds a mile) for Cruse Bereavement Charity.

Setting off on 21st July she will hike, carrying all her kit, from Oxton in Nottinghamshire to Scarborough in Yorkshire aiming to reach the finish line within 9 days, camping and staying in hostels along the way.

As well as her A levels, Martha is completing her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which requires her to research, plan, document and successfully execute her project in order to gain the qualification, which will provide valuable additional UCAS points for entry into University.

With an interest in charity work, she chose to plan this walk herself, researching and creating her own route from start to finish.    Martha will be walking alongside her friend, Bethan Mackie, aged 17 from Nottingham, who received critical support from Cruse in 2012 following the sudden loss of her stepmother.

As well as aiming to fundraise for the charity, Martha will be producing a short promotional video of the walk to help raise awareness of the charity and how much they were able to help Bethan adjust to life without her stepmum.

Martha said “Alongside all of the planning and preparation, I am having to train hard to improve my levels of fitness and stamina.  It would be a real boost to my confidence and determination to complete this if I can reach my fundraising target.  I know it would mean a great deal to the charity too, and those who need to use their services”.  To send a donation and support Martha please visit her Just Giving page at:
