Wide reading:

It is really important that students read as much and as widely as possible outside school.

Years 7 and 8 should be reading their Accelerated Reader book each day and aiming to finish a book in no more than three weeks.

Year 9 are taken to the library each fortnight and should always have a novel on the go, usually connected to the term's theme in English. This term, it is dystopian novels so many students have chosen 1984, Animal Farm, The Hunger Games and Divergent series.

For Years 10 and 11, reading non fiction is our focus for wider reading. The English department are emailing links to topical news articles each Thursday. These are being sent to students' school email addresses. Please encourage your son or daughter to check their school email and read the articles.

Sixth Form should be reading widely to support their studies. They might be interested in a new app on iPhones called News. It allows users to select from news sources including BBC, newspapers and many magazines including The Economist then creates a personalised selection of articles. The BBC and broadsheet newspapers also have useful apps which can be customised to the reader's interests and areas of A level study.
