WGS Students Speak out for Speaking

The three students from our Intermediate Youth Speaks Team and their teacher Mrs. Enright were invited to take part in Radio Oxford's Kat & Co show on Tuesday morning.

We had a very exciting morning live in the studio for an hour as part of Radio Oxford's week long focus on Witney. The students, Tom Read, Alysha-Paris Godfrey and Harry Dunkley spoke about a wide range of subjects including school, what Witney has to offer young people, animal rights and why they enjoy public speaking. Kat was interested in our Academic Enrichment programme and impressed at the ambitious work we are doing to build our students' thinking, discussing and speaking skills.

Tom, Harry and Alysha all introduced a chosen song and saw close up how a radio show works. The producer kindly gave us a tour of the tv studio, too,  and showed us the BBC local newsroom. We even met Strictly Come Dancing star Flavia who was on the show next and got some photos to show our families. It has certainly inspired the students to consider broadcasting as a career!

The students spoke confidently and with enthusiasm and were a real credit to the school.

The team went on to compete in the Rotary Club - Youth Speaks Regional Final on Thursday evening and were praised by the judges on their performance. Sadly they didn't get through to the next round but we are all very proud of them.
