On Wednesday, four teams of year 7 students competed in this year's Acer Trust Public Speaking Competition. Held remotely over Zoom this year because of Covid, the competition also featured teams from Icknield School in Watlington and Matthew Arnold School in Oxford. All of them rose to the occasion with outstanding speeches and we were rewarded with great success!
We won best speech! Congratulations to Abigail Sheehy, Zoe le Feuvre, Amy Block and Phoebe Parsloe who gave an outstanding speech on the subject 'Should we reduce the voting age to 12?'
We also came second! Congratulations to James Ives, James Buchan, Ella Fox and Herbie Taylor who debated 'What would the world be like if we all agreed all the time?'
Best chairperson award went to our own Jacob Taylor, whose amazing team asked 'Is it time to give up on this planet and colonise another one?' and special mention went to Eleni Buckridge, opposer in the fantastic team who debated 'Is AI really such a good thing?'
All four teams were fantastic, and we are very proud of each one of them. Next year, it is Wood Green's turn to host the competition and we will be looking for talented new year 7s to follow in the rhetorical footsteps of these students!
