Wood Green School took part in the FA Pokemon Schools Futsal Cup – South East Regional Qualifier on Thursday 27th February. The event was held at Medway Park Sports Centre in Gillingham, Kent. As county winners in an earlier stage of the competition, Wood Green School were representing Oxfordshire. After a long journey on the motorway and over the Dartford Bridge, we made it to Gillingham with plenty of time to spare. We were first on against Cardinal Newman. A tough opening match with a late goal earning us our first victory 1-0. Back to back games without a break and very intense 15 minutes matches meant regular rotation of players. Fitness and touch were very much a factor. In our second match, we played The Howard School (eventual winners of the overall competition). They were very strong in defence and overpowered us eventually beating us 3-0. Next match was against The Royal Russell School who took an early lead. 3-1 down, we managed to get back in the game and level it 3-3 with a late equaliser. Our final match was against Cornelius Vermuyden School. With much of the possession and an early lead, we were too complacent in our game management. The final score was 4-3 having conceded goals which was uncharacteristic of the team. Having won 2, drawn 1 and only lost 1, we stood a strong chance of being one of the two teams that progress to the final round of this competition. The finals scores were entered and we saw that we had finished joint second place. Unfortunately, we were denied a place in the next round by goal difference in the end. Well done to all of the boys that have trained and played throughout the competition. Great ambassadors for Wood Green School, the referees were very complimentary of their behaviour, attitude and ability.
