Lego Robotics Competition

Members of the Robotics Club attended the regional FIRST® LEGO® League competition at Oxford Brookes university, competing against 28 other teams from schools across Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Gloucestershire.

FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge is a global STEM programme for teams of young people, to encourage an interest in real world themes and develop key skills that are crucial for their future careers.

Young people work together to explore a given topic and to design, build and program an autonomous LEGO® robot to solve a series of missions.

The competition took place at Oxford Brookes university, and we arrived in a busy and bustling atmosphere and were greeted by Boston Dynamics friendly robotic dog – the students took quite a shine to it as it moved around like a real dog, very surreal and a lot of fun!

The competition took place in two parts, firstly presenting to a group of judges about how you work as a team, design and built the robot as well as how you research and solve problems.

The second part was a lot more physical as the team’s robots were put through their paces. They were given a robotics game where the robot the teams designed and built were timed in completing a series of challenges on a mat. This involved a great deal of problem solving and iterating design ideas, while also being a lot of fun!

We entered two teams and they both did extraordinarily well and should be very proud of themselves. Already looking forward to next year!
